Gerry Adams has been a republican activist for over 60 years. He served over four years in prison between 1972 and 1978. He subsequently led Sinn Féin from 1983 to 2018, serving as MP (1983–92, 1997–2011), MLA (1998–2010) and TD (2011–2018).
